What is a tax service?
A tax service is specialised technical assistance that manages a taxpayer's obligations. It covers the analysis, planning, preparation and filing of income tax returns and other taxes with the tax authorities.
Unlike general accounting, which records past transactions, a tax service focuses on interpreting the tax legislation in force (such as Panama's Tax Code) to prevent penalties, take advantage of lawful incentives and structure operations so the tax impact is legitimately minimised.
What do tax services cover?
The scope of a professional tax service in Panama includes very specific operational and strategic work:
- Sworn income tax return (individuals and legal entities) - Preparing the annual report of income, costs and expenses that determines the tax payable.
- ITBMS management (Panama's transfer tax on movable goods and services) - Monthly preparation of the forms for companies selling goods or services taxed at 7%, 10% or 15%.
- Property tax calculation - Determining the cadastral value and the applicable rate on real estate, including applying for family-estate tax exemptions.
- Tax residence filings - Obtaining the certificate that accredits a person or company as resident in Panama for double-taxation treaty purposes.
Tax services EYSH Financial offers
At EYSH Financial we have structured our offering to cover every angle of the Panamanian tax ecosystem:
- We analyse your business structure to apply the benefits of special legislation (such as SEM, EMMA or Panamá Pacífico) that lawfully reduces the tax rate.
- For companies transacting with related parties abroad, we prepare the local file and the transfer-pricing study the law requires.
- Technical representation when the DGI issues a notice, defending the client's interests through the audit process.
- Handling the taxes that apply to payments made to suppliers or entities outside Panama.
- Active management so the company always holds a current tax clearance certificate for tenders or banking procedures.
What problems do tax services actually solve?
The complexity of the Panamanian tax system creates problems that can bring a commercial operation to a halt if they are not handled properly. Tax services act as a technical and administrative shield against the following:
- Penalties and financial surcharges - Avoids fines for late filing or calculation errors that generate monthly late-payment interest.
- Inconsistencies in the tax account statement - Fixes credits or debits misapplied on the e-Tax 2.0 platform that block the tax clearance certificate.
- Double taxation - Puts in place the mechanisms that stop the same income being taxed in two jurisdictions, using the international treaties Panama has signed.
- Weak cash flow - Helps plan estimated payments and other taxes so the company has liquidity at the key moments of the year.
- Reputational risk - Keeps the company's image transparent before banks, investors and the State.
Advantages and disadvantages of tax services in Panama
| Advantages | Disadvantages |
|---|---|
| Cost optimisation: identifies deductible expenses that reduce the taxable base. | Reliance on a third party: requires sharing sensitive information with the consulting firm. |
| Regulatory currency: assurance that the company complies with the most recent legislation (such as transparency laws). | Operating cost: represents a monthly or annual investment for the company. |
| Legal certainty: sharply reduces the risk of aggressive DGI audits. | Implementation time: tidying up neglected tax accounting can take months. |
| Peace of mind: the taxpayer focuses on the business while the specialist handles the forms. | Discipline required: obliges the client to keep strict order in how invoices are handled. |

Frequently asked questions
When is the sworn income tax return due in Panama?
For legal entities the deadline is 31 March each year. For individuals it is 15 March. In both cases a one-month extension can be requested.
What is the territoriality principle in Panama?
It is the regime under which only income generated inside Panamanian territory is taxed. Foreign-source income (operations completed or taking effect outside the country) is generally exempt from income tax.
Who has to pay ITBMS?
Any individual or legal entity carrying out taxable activities whose average annual sales exceed B/. 36,000.00, or B/. 3,000.00 a month.
Can I deduct medical and school expenses on my personal return?
Yes. Panamanian law allows individuals to deduct certain health expenses incurred in the country and school expenses (tuition and supplies) for their dependants, provided the proper tax invoices are held.
What happens if I do not file on time?
The DGI imposes automatic fines ranging from B/. 100.00 for individuals to B/. 1,000.00 or more for legal entities, and the taxpayer cannot obtain a tax clearance certificate until it is resolved.
